Bus Lane Enforcement
Bus Lane enforcement is becoming an important tool for cities trying to control the use of bus lanes. Loops buried in the road signal the presence of a vehicle in the bus lane to a PIPS P362 camera which takes an infra red picture for number plate capture and a colour overview for evidential purposes. The number plate is compared against a number plate white list (list of vehicles allowed to be in the bus lane) and if the plate is not in the list the overview picture, together with a date and time stamp are sent back to the server in the central control room via the public internet over a GPRS link.
The server runs PIPS BLIS (Bus Lane Infringement System) software and allows the operators to view pictures from many sites via a web-style interface. The list of vehicles can be sorted and filtered to isolate events for a particular day or time. It can also detect persistent offenders.
The camera is connected to a PIPS P3x7 controller, which can also control a message sign. The loop system can aid in the selection of vehicles to be captured. It can, for instance, be taught the magnetic profiles of buses. If it recognises the vehicle as a bus, the camera is not triggered.
The white list can be updated automatically once a day from the server.
